Tanner first gained wide attention through his Backcountry Journal vlog, where his impressive skills were paired with a rare gentleness and deep respect for the natural world. The combination of expertise and genuine reverence quickly set him apart, drawing a loyal following. What began as a simple chronicle of his time in the wild soon grew into a platform for collaborations, teaching, mentorship, and community; laying the foundation for the work he carries forward today.
Born and raised between British Columbia’s coastlines and Montana’s mountains, Tanner carries dual citizenship in Canada and the U.S.—and a lifelong reverence for the wild landscapes he calls home. With over fifteen years of backcountry guiding, he blends bushcraft skills with a deeper inquiry into belonging; to land, to story, and to self. His path has been shaped not only by survival and navigation training, but also by leading men’s circles, co-facilitating rites of passage, and mentoring solo expeditions. Tanner believes intentional time outdoors has the power to reorient a man’s life. When not in the field, he writes on masculinity and land stewardship, with his first book on these themes already making its way around firesides. He now lives seasonally between the Kootenays and the Pacific Northwest.
Tanner’s trainings go beyond instruction; they are lived experiences. Through firecraft, navigation, expedition prep, and solo challenges, participants learn to rely on skill, discipline, and instinct. Each program strips away distraction, tests limits, and turns the wild into both classroom and crucible, building resilience that endures long after the trail.
Anyone willing to step into the wild with humility. You don’t need to be an expert, but you do need curiosity, grit, and a desire to grow. These programs are built for those who want both practical skills and a deeper connection to the land.
The Solo Trails program differs from other trainings by taking your skills into the wilderness alone, shifting the focus from learning techniques to living them. It is an immersion in solitude that goes beyond what can be found in a group setting.
More than anything, you’ll walk away with a shift in how you see yourself and the land. These trainings build resilience, presence, and humility, offering lessons that carry into every part of life and shaping the way you meet both challenge and possibility.

No. Every training is designed to meet you where you are. Beginners will learn the foundations at a steady pace, while those with experience will be challenged to deepen their practice, test their limits, and expand their edge.
A gear list is provided for each program. You’ll need to bring personal essentials like boots, clothing, and a pack. Core group equipment and specialized tools are covered, and Tanner will walk you through what’s necessary and what isn’t.
Bushcraft training focuses on building hands-on survival skills like firecraft, shelter-building, and navigation. The Solo Trails program takes those skills into the wilderness alone, where the challenge is less about technique and more about presence, resilience, and self-reliance.

Working with Tanner as a mentor reshaped how I show up in the outdoors and in my work with men. He leads with patience and clarity, yet continually calls you into greater strength and honesty, holding a space where real growth can happen. What I carried away wasn’t just new skills, but a deeper sense of integrity, presence, and the impact I want to create in the world—both in my own life and in the lives of those I serve.
Training bushcraft with Tanner gave me more than new skills, it gave me confidence and a deeper respect for the land. His teaching is precise and patient, making firecraft, shelter-building, and navigation both practical and profound. What stayed with me was not just the techniques, but the way he connects each one to resilience, presence, and responsibility to the natural world. I came out sharper in the wild and steadier in life.
The Solo Trails program pushed me further than I expected, even with years of backcountry experience. Tanner gave me the skills and mindset to face the solitude, but the real test was meeting myself out there. His training showed me that survival is as much about presence as technique, and it changed the way I lead in the backcountry. I returned more resilient, self-reliant, and with a renewed reverence for the wild.

The land has always been Tanner’s greatest teacher. Through bushcraft, mentorship, and expeditions, he invites others to learn from the same source; cultivating humility, belonging, and a clearer sense of self. Each experience becomes more than skill-building; it is an initiation into living with courage, presence, and resilience. It is also a call to foster strong communities that both learn from and steward the natural world.
Join Tanner’s circle beyond the trail. Each letter carries stories from the backcountry, practical skills you can use, and reflections on what it means to live with resilience and presence.
